Jessie’s Techniques: Art and picture framing techniques created using industry standards & my 40+ years working as a picture framer.
Methods & Options for Framing
Engraving: A method of printing using a metal plate inscribed with a sharp tool and printed in a press.
Etching: A method of printing using a tool to incise a design on a metal plate coated with an acid-resistant substance. The plate is then given an acid bath which etches the exposed areas.
Lithograph: A printed work of art created by a flat printing plate and while using the repulsion of grease and water.
Serigraph: A print made by using a silk screen process, in which ink is forced from a stencil, then adhered to stretched silk fabric.
Original Print: A work of art that has been created specifically for the printing medium. It is generally printed by the artist or under the artists direction.
Reproduction: The duplication of an original work of art in another medium, such as a lithograph painting, or computer print.
Limited-edition prints: Identical prints of the same limited production edition, numbered in sequence. A maximum number of copies is stated. Example: 1/20 means the first signed print of 20 prints in the edition.
A/P stands for artist proofs. P/P stands for printer’s proofs.
Linoleum Block & Wood Block prints: When the image of an artistic design is carved into linoleum (mounted on blocker stability) or a wood panel. Then the ink has applied to the surface of the carving. Then using a roller or burnishing tool rub the image onto the paper lift the paper from the surface and you have a print.
