Jessie’s Techniques: Art and picture framing techniques created using industry standards & my 40+ years working as a picture framer.

Conservation & Art Care

Conservation: A process that best preserves your art.

  • The matting and backing supplies are 100% acid-free.

  • The Plexiglas or glass (glazing) used is UV protected. OP3 or True View are industry standards.

On using Plexiglas or glass: When I worked for Art Services, we did very little framing with glass. When glass breaks it can scratch the art and cause damage to the art. It’s also dangerous especially if the piece is large or above a couch or bed. In most cases, I stopped using glass in my business by the mid-1990s.

Hanging Art: It’s important to use picture hangers that are designed for hanging art. Depending on the weight of the art hangers generally come in three sizes. 30lb. 50lb. and 100lb. weight hooks. If you want to pick up some for use around the house, a 50lb hook will generally suit your needs.

I put hooks on the back of every frame I sell. As a picture framer, it’s a cheap insurance policy and also helps to build goodwill with clients.

After the Northridge Earthquake in LA in 1994 (a devastating event), the only art that came to me for repairs was art owned by people that didn’t use the hangers I supplied them with the frame or art by other framers that didn’t supply picture frame hangers.
